Recent Client Achievements
 

We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the following initiatives:

A $4.1 million campaign for the Lewes Canalfront Park. Campaign co-chairs Joe and Debbie Schell and Dennis Forney and Mayor Jim Ford played key roles in this exciting 30-month undertaking. The Park dedication took place on June 2, featuring speeches by Gov. Minner and Rep. Castle. Horizon continues to assist with the final “Village Green” phase of the project, a $1.6 million campaign.

A $4.9 million capital campaign for the Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis, now operating out of their impressive new 22,800 square foot facility at the former Wiley Bates High School. . . congratulations to Associates Bess Freedlander & Lauren Maddox, and to campaign volunteers Pete Ponne, Wayne and Valerie Rogers, Jeanine Wayson, Katherine Mandrin and Frank Chaney for their outstanding leadership

A $1.2 million campaign on behalf of Talbot County Public Schools, to provide a laptop computer to every student in grades 9 -12. Superintendent Dr. Karen B. Salmon’s community leadership council included Breene M. Kerr, chair of the Grayce B. Kerr Fund, which made the initial grant to help launch the laptop program. Liz Freedlander was the lead consultant for this effort.

A two-year fundraising effort for the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake to help renovate their camps in Northern Delaware and on the Eastern Shore. Horizon provided counsel to their major gift committee in Wilmington led by Sally Gore and Larry Gehrke, and associate Henri LaMotte managed a fundraising effort in Maryland’s mid-shore area, co-chaired by Hope Harrington and Amy Schisler.

In Waldorf, MD Horizon Associate Lauren Maddox oversaw the successful launch of the Community Foundation of Charles County. This assignment involved a feasibility study, recruiting the founding board of directors, identifying three years of operating funds and hiring the foundation's first Executive Director.

We were pleased to recently place a highly qualified development professional with client Delaware Technical & Community CollegeMark Lally, former Sussex County Director for Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) began his new assignment this summer.
 

Associate Lauren Maddox is the lead consultant on a major fund raising initiative to build a new facility for the Lighthouse Shelter in Annapolis. LHS is the only year-round shelter for both individuals and homeless families in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.

 

 

New Client Assignments

 

Our newest client, the Delmarva Christian High School (Georgetown, DE), requires a broad range of marketing communication and development programming. We are proud to have been chosen to assist this remarkable institution, which is one of the finest private schools on the east coast.

Horizon was recently retained by the board of The Columbia Foundation (Columbia, MD) to oversee the recruitment of their new president/CEO, who replace retiring longtime exec Barbara Lawson.

 

Horizon is working closely with the board of the Greater Lewes Foundation on an ambitious “Future Scan” effort in which GLF will help anticipate challenges facing Lewes by the year 2017. We are also helping the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation, a GLF fund, become established.

After having assisted client La Esperanza with their very successful 10-year anniversary Gala, we recently sent their 2006 annual report to the printer and are now helping them with a significant land donation.

We are privileged to be working with ING Direct, the nation’s largest Internet bank, to help structure their corporate giving activities and develop a model program, Kid$ave, to encourage savings among lower income youth. CEO and President Arkadi Kuhlmann is leading company efforts to focus national attention on the importance of savings. Communities in Schools is an important partner in the Kid$ave initiative.

New clients in Milford, DE include the Milford Public Library, where Horizon is leading a $3.5 million capital campaign to double the existing facility, with the help of associate Peggy Reilly and campaign leaders Kay Hudson, David Burton and Richard Johnson.

Also, MHDC (Milford Housing Development Corp.), the region’s largest provider of affordable housing, has contracted with Horizon to conduct new branding activities, including public relations, event coordination, an annual report, logo and other materials; and to help create their first Development Council and department.

Our 2006 planning efforts on behalf of the University of Delaware’s College of Marine and Earth Studies will soon result in the launch of an important new “Marine Fellows” program this fall, working closely with College Dean Nancy Targett.

Community Legal Aid Services has retained Horizon to design and launch a capital effort to cover costs of acquiring and renovating their new Sussex County offices in Georgetown, DE.
